Frequently Asked Questions

Are the books young adult books or adult books?

The series is an adult series of books. That being said, The Alexander Chronicles, especially book one, could be read by a teenage audience. When the books get past book three in that series, they will be for adults. The reason why the first book in The Alexander Chronicles feels like it’s meant for a younger audience is that ten years ago I imagined this series as the adventures of a kid. When I took it up again, I realized I had no interest in writing about the adventures of a kid. I wanted to understand his whole family under extraordinary circumstances. As the whole world developed, I felt it would be great to see the innocence of the first book, before I throw the family into an apocalyptic setting for the remainder of the series. All, but Recruitment, contain sexuality, violence, and more delicate language. As a mother, I would be okay with anyone over 14 or 15 to read them, but the subject matters will be very adult (violence, divorce, midlife, sexual violence, etc.).

Are the individual subseries interconnected?

Yes! I wanted to pursue the idea of a huge global event, like the possible ending of the planet, through the eyes of different people. I wanted to see different people approaching this in their own way. It is based on the idea that two people in the same house have profoundly different realities. I am writing the series in chronological order. The characters interact in between series based on the timeline.

Is it science fiction or urban fantasy?

It is both. I consider the series science fiction because it is an interplanetary story that focuses a lot on the importance of science to solve impossible problems. I think it is an urban fantasy because I put so much of the world into the large global cities and while the concepts are “scientific” the possibility of it actually happening (like crossing from one world to the next by powerful people that live forever) is fantasy.

How long will the series be?

I see this as a lifetime project. I imagine there will be ten to twelve books for each of the subseries and then it will expand into other directions. In my happy place, I will be working on this for the next twenty or thirty years.
